SDGs Secretariat celebrates World Environment Day

Islamabad (June 4th, 2021): The SDGs Secretariat of the National Assembly of Pakistan organized a meeting of the SDG 13 Sub-Group today, at SDGs Secretariat at 11 am. The meeting was chaired by Hon. Riaz Fatyana, Convener National Parliamentary Taskforce and Hon. Convener Ms. Naureen Farooq Ibrahim.

In her welcome remarks, Ms. Naureen Farooq Ibrahim said “World Environment Day; is happily celebrated worldwide on the 5th of June every year. On this day awareness and action programs are organized to support & protect our environment. It celebrates awareness about those things that affect the world and the environment in a positive and negative way. This day acknowledges us with the chance to broaden our vision, our opinions, and our responsibilities toward preserving & enhancing the environment.”

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Mr. Hamza Shafqaat presented a detailed report on the ongoing green projects in Islamabad and how positively they will contribute in mitigating the effects of climate change.

The Parliamentarians who attended the meeting were Hon. Nafeesa Innayatullah Khattak, Hon. Syma Nadeem, Hon. Rukhsana Naveed and Hon. Dr. Haider Ali Khan.

Further UNICEF Pakistan also participated in the meeting and shared their comprehensive inputs regarding the on-going activities. They also briefed the participants regarding their upcoming projects in relation to data and research for SDG 13.

The meeting was concluded by Hon. Riaz Fatyana, in his closing remarks he stated, “Climate change is one of the defining global challenges faced by us. It has far-reaching adverse economic, social and political impacts.”

In the end he urged all the participants to celebrate this day in its true manner – that is by not wasting water, planting a tree and not polluting the environment you breathe from.”

The participants offered vote of thanks to the Chair and thanked for calling upon this meeting to discuss such an important agenda on a very significant day.
