Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms. Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the Prime Minister is committed to investing in water infrastructure, disaster risk management, adaptation and mitigation. She further affirmed that the UN Sustainable Development Goals Agenda is the National Agenda of Pakistan, which cannot be implemented without the support of parliamentarians.

The Federal Minister made these remarks at the Closing Ceremony of the National Meet on SDGs was concluded today in Islamabad, the Capital of Pakistan – where Members of National, Federal and Legislative Assemblies gathered to re-affirm their commitment to the 2030 UN Plan for Sustainable Development Goals. The two-day National Parliamentary Meet devised a National Framework on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals which will ensure an effective and efficient roadmap for their monitoring and implementation. This framework was composed at the National Meet on SDGs, organized by the Parliamentary SDGs Secretariat, National Assembly of Pakistan in collaboration with Mustehkam Parlimaan, a project of the European Union. The outcome document, which was signed by representatives from the National, Provincial and Legislative Assemblies, consists of all the inputs and recommendations shared by Hon. Members and stakeholders – who participated from all around the country.

Addressing the participants as Chief Guest, the Hon. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ms. Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the World is moving towards “What’s next” – with 8 years left to achieve – I think it’s time that we start evaluating our performance and prioritize the goals which address our immediate issues and help us in achieving sustainable solutions. She further re-iterated on mainstreaming SDGs budgeting and allocating appropriate financial resources which are required for the achievement of each goal and its targets. She also highlighted that the Parliament’s oversight and legislative role is crucial in creating enabling environment for SDGs to overcome bottlenecks. Furthermore, she talked about media’s crucial role in sensitizing the masses around SDGs.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister / Convener National Parliamentary Taskforce on SDGs Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam in her closing remarks said that “The model for sustainable development is dependent upon High-level political leadership, participation of stakeholders in the policy-making, decisions based on multidisciplinary science, and solutions that aim to integrate all dimensions of sustainable development in a coherent and mutually conclusive manner.”

The National Meet on SDGs hosted an in-depth and conclusive discussion on Pakistan’s issues, such as urban flooding, environmental degradation, rising poverty, food scarcity, energy difficulties, and inadequate flood control, with an emphasis on the post-COVID-19 situation and with the aim to integrate SDGs into National Policy.

The event was supported by Mustehkam Parlimaan, a project of the EU focused on providing support to parliamentary development in Pakistan. The project is being implemented by the German Agency for International Development (GIZ-INS) and Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Affairs (PIPS)
